Even with thunderbird (or any other IMAP client), the mail can be
kept on the server by (simple) configuration choices.

This is much more serious. However, considering that they used Windows
in a way which allowed the computers to acquire viruses, I would say
that it requires educating the users some more as well!

For example, configuring the browser to clear cookie cache and form
data; to keep all passwords locked with a master password or in a
password safe; to logout or lock screen while suspending the machine
etc.

Being in charge of security for big-wigs nowadays is no picnic. The
natural responses of most senior people belong to a time when the
world was a safer place. Are they willing (esp. in India) to follow
someone else's (usually a junior person's) directions (usually more
inconvenient than the "obvious" way) on how things must be done?

Regards,

Kapil.
