You are correct. The debconf templates do not have values for the
resolution.

How do you know that a larger resolution is supported? Perhaps the
combination worked in the past but is unstable with the new xserver
and could crash and/or damage the equipment. :-|

Yes. Create your own /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and install it. All the
tweaking of the configuration that was possible in the past is still
possible. :-)

This file can be created in many ways. As mentioned earlier, there is
also a backup copy of this file when systems are upgraded.
