It is not a question of newbies alone here. I got a HCL laptop having Via Chrome for graphics. Ubuntu vanilla install failed but Wubi went thro'. X was hanging on invocation in the vanilla install. Did certainly help in this case where drives were not available. I wish I had greater detail to show. I did this for my nephew's study laptop and he is'nt here now. Many laptops come with preinstalled OS. Tinkering with partitions, installing Ubuntu standard (no custom) blows away the recovery partition. For folks that do not want to go thro' the pain of reinstalling windows, WUBI definitely helps. It is a good bridge to let Ubuntu get on to a Windows machine and then take over the laptop, once it has proven itself reliable/ useful for that specific user.
