Dear All,

One of my known friends is the administrator in a company.

He has got close to 6 servers (all HP ML350) all running Windows 20003 with
MSSQL 2005/2008. He is taking backup in a rudimentary way. His total backup
size would be around 100GB and is increasing by 20% per year.

He doesnot have a tape drive and he wants to install it in ML350.

I have asked him to use one of the servers as a Backup Server and suggested
Backup Server like OpenFiler and he asked me to help in installing the whole
thing. I am pretty confident of Openfiler but would like to know Backup
Software which is open source / Free software

He was ready to give one HP ML350 Server for this purpose which is having
5*73GB SCSI HDDs with RAID5 also.

Now, I would like to know

1. What is the best partition layout for Openfiler?

2. Which backup software will be suitable for taking backup periodically
(MSSQL) ? Preferably Open Source/Free Software capable of Volume Shadow copy
Service. I have checked Zmanda but Amanda Enterprise is capable of taking
open files backup but it is costly. Correct me if I am wrong. Also
preferable if the software is capable of Data Deduplication.

3. How to take the backup from 5 Servers to Openfiler and Tape Drive?

4. How to take the backup from the servers to Openfiler and also to the
tape?

5. I have gone thro' the Openfiler forums and openfiler will accept a tape
drive but what will be the best policy of taking the backup from Disks--->
disk ----> Tape
to install the tape drive in the Openfiler or on one of the other servers?

6. Virtualization is ruled out.

Please let me know the solution for this. I have posted this to Openfiler
forums also but thought of knowing if any other alternatives are available
from you all.

Regards

Ravi Kumar
