True - if we want to avoid the whole rigmarole of setting up a legal entity, I believe raising funds for a specific purpose is ideal - that way, people can contribute to events which are truly helpful in their opinion, provided the members who are directly involved with organizing the event (and are requesting for funds) give an outlay of proposed expenses. This gives the all of the members to suggest alternatives if something seems too expensive (for e.g: I'm not so sure about press meets, but I'd gladly contribute for posters and other material).

Of course, I guess the contributors will also expect a run-down of actual money spent, and who is handling the leftover monies. If we can take care of these things, I think raising money for specific events should not be a big issue.
