Are you talking about student's project ??

This depends on their coding skill and interest. the main idea must be
* student will be able to develop some minimum software using foss tools ,
it can be a command line also. no need to have a rpm at the final stage
* student must be able to use svn/cvs and get familiar with development
process,(bug tracking etc)
* they must be able to put and think the license file, This step is
necessary as this will make a software "FOSS".
* they must lean about the documentation and why it is needed.

contribution can be done with translation also,

also writing and inspiring other to use FOSS and develop is also a imp way
to contribute,,
