Can somebody guide me how to remove the redundant linux-header from the booting screen?

I use ubuntu 9.10 with the latest linux-header 2.6.31-19. I have been
able to delete other headers thru Synaptic PM. But linux-header
2.6.31-17 is still continuing to load but is already uninstalled. I
just want to delete this entry from appearing on the boot screen. When
I try to open menu.lst thru the terminal it is showing a blank screen
without any entry.
