ensure that the virtualization is enabled in CMOS.

Only for heavy duty graphics such as gaming/visualization and the such.

Instead spend on system RAM as much as you can afford. _That_ helps a
lot in virtualization.

AFAIK, core 2 can do 64 bit. As early as 2007 I had fedora 7 and
centos 5 (both x86_64) installed on couple of desktops.
