I have that checked. Thank you for the links. I'll try applying the
fixes mentioned there. The problem is that it doesn't occur reliably. It
just happens sometimes. Weird, eh?

I just saw this thread. I used to have this problem before and although I never could figure out the /exact/ reason, it appeared to be something funky going on with pango layouts.

My question as far as reproduction of the problem is concerned is: Are you seeing this when you switch different desktop environments ? For me, i saw the funky fonts when firefox was the first pango dependent application to start (when I used WindowMaker as my primary desktop). For example, if instead I launched pidgin/thunderbird/..etc before firefox, the fonts would be just fine.
