What exactly is "college use"? If you want something with which you can do your assignments, then any computer sold within the last 5 years will do. If "college use" includes games, then you can never be satisfied! Here's my recommendation: 1. the best/biggest monitor you can afford (20+ inch LCD with VGA and DVI) 2. TVS Gold mechanical keyboard, and a Microsoft Basic mouse 3. good hardware warranty and support from your vendor 4. as much RAM as you can afford (3GB is recommended for 32bit OS) 5. AMD CPU and ASUS/Gigabyte board, and peripherals Note that everything other than your monitor, kbd, mouse will lose value very quickly. So IMO buying the fastest CPU or graphics card today is pointless.
