In basic terms, an installation of Zimbra will provide you with a
mailstore against which accounts can be configured and, a
calendaring/collaboration system.

Zimbra also provides a desktop client
<http://www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html> that you can use with
the Zimbra installation (or, any other mail/collaboration server)

Using standard mail clients (mutt, alpine, Thunderbird, Evolution,
Sylpheed, Kmail etc) to access IMAP/POP accounts serviced by the
installation of a Zimbra server can work out faster in terms of
searching mails.
