AMD processors generally come with higher CPU clock frequency than Intel for the same price. But what AMD makes up for clock frequency, they generally lose out on L1/L2 cache size. Most AMD processors come with half or less than half the integrated L2 cache than Intel equivalents (which drives down their costs significantly). Performance comparison benchmarks between Intel and AMD processors can be very subjective. Most large-scale enterprise server hardware today prefer Intel Itanium (IA64) or Intel Xeon processors which make large applications perform better overall than others x86 variants - but at a steep price. But for a budget-conscious user AMD might be a better option than Intel processor. The performance drop in comparison might not be too drastic considering the price factor. And yes, AMD still seems to have heating problems in some of their processor models. My AMD Neo based netbook (ASUS 1210T) gets extremely hot when I push it to the edge (like compiling the Linux kernel, or running any intensive FPS game).
