And what is this claim based on?  Most claims on SSD failure rates have been
shown to be exaggerations at best.  SSD lives, even pushed to max write
rates, have been shown to average 7+ years, which is higher than most
storages.

Personally, I've been using SSDs for backups and a MacBook Air and a MacBook
Pro with SSDs for the past couple of years and I've been quite impressed.
I've been fortunate enough to have had no problems, and both my machines
have traveled a fair bit and taken enormous beatings.

Not that I discount your advice on backups, of course, but in my experience,
SSDs perform rather admirably in both desktop or server environments.
