I am relating my personal experience. Take it FWIW. On Wed, Dec 28, 2011 at 10:10 AM, Shrinivasan T <[email protected]> wrote:

It looks very nice and compact but after a while the small foot print feels a bit cramped especially the keyboard. Having said that there are two HP netbooks in my household, mainly for "on the road" usage. About a year back HP was selling it w/o an OS and I got it got for a shade under 15K. openSUSE 11.4 detected all devices and my sister is quite happy with it. > But, sony viao has 11.6" screen which has most wider screen in the tiny > devices. > > Will the sony viao 11.6" support linux well? I believe the SONY VAIO 11.6" comes with the AMD E-350 + Radeon GPU @ Rs. 23K. The CPU/GPU combo will need the latest version of your favorite distro (kernel 2.6.30 or above IIRC). Please search for compatibility before purchase. Compaq has a laptop with the same CPU+GPU combo with a 13" screen. In Mumbai, it was going for about 21K with Windows7 HB. It is slightly bigger than the 10" netbooks, has a DVD writer too. The keyboard size is comfortable. This was a high runner on my short list (I was dumping my Acer 5545) until Toshiba came out with a Diwali special (i5-2430, 4GB RAM, Atheros WiFi and best of all NO OS). > > The usage will be browsing, openoffice, python/php coding. > I think the netbooks should be able to handle this, it depends on the back end database and how heavily your apps will use it. > > Please share your thoughts on performance/processor/RAM requirements > of netbooks. Avoid 3GB configuration that is sold along with Windows 7 HB 32 bit version. Make sure the 2GB configuration has 1 DIMM slot empty for you to add additional 2GB if you do need it.
