Could be. Your lappie usb ports may not be able to sustain the current
draw by the hard disk.   BTW, is the lappie running on battery *or*
power?

Some devices come with a Y USB cable wherein there are two USB
connectors that go into two USB ports on the system.  The extra
connector is for additional power draw (I have an external DVD Writer
with such a cable).    Do you have such a contraption?

I suspect power issues or some intermittent hardware failure in the
external disk system.

I have had dry solder problem with a branded external disk drive case,
when connected it exhibited symptom similar to your experience.

Connect the disk to other systems  (if you have access), use the on
board USB ports.   See if the problem manifests.
