Very good suggestion indeed. Students would be very much interested to do such
a real time project. But we should not forget the reality.

I was a Engineering student till last year from one of the anna university
affiliated college. So I would share my experience here,

I started to think idea for my final year project when I stepped into 6th sem.
Even I got an idea of making web search more useful (atleast in my terms) using
semantic web. Some kind of minimal search which might be similar to google's
page rank but this is using keywords that are present in two or more pages and
they would be related in someway.

When I started to explain about semantic web and my idea, they said we have
google and this project exist, without expecting any more explanation from me
dept staff ordered to change the project. So I came up with one more idea
related to cloud computing which was also rejected.

Except me and few other friends, almost everyone got their project selected
since they all went to project center and bought one and we are still to choose
a topic. Later I realised that staff's are trying to corner and push us to
reach project center.

They forced to choose a IEEE Project, one reason was my project guide was doing
his Ph.d and he is using me for his phd project which he admitted to me openly
and another reason was dept staff's friends own a project center through which
staff gains commission.

This is not the rarest case, this happens for 90% of students in 95% of college
in TN. IIT, MIT, CEG kind of colleges might be exceptional. So first let us
think how well staff are supporting and encouraging students to proceed with
their own idea, if not this particular discussion and efforts would go wasted.
