You could have still worked on your idea, and released your work as
free/open source software (F/OSS). Nobody stopped you from doing that!
The notion that the final year project is very important, and that is
the only one that counts, is a single point of failure. What was not
learnt and accomplished in four years of "engineering" cannot be
undone with a "good" final year project.
Again, nobody stops students from contributing to F/OSS projects
during their semester or summer breaks. Just because they didn't make
it in to GSoC doesn't mean they can't work on their proposal, or pick
other tasks from the project and work on them.
