On January 28, the Extra Mural Lecture Team of IIT Madras in association
with Free Software Foundation Tamil Nadu, organised a lecture on Open
Source Drug Discovery by Prof. Samir K Brahmachari, who is the Former
Director General of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Reserach
(IC&SR).

The lecture was part of Education Freedom Day celebrations, which
encourages usage of Free Software and Free Educational Resources in
education.

The speaker talked about how the culture of Free and Open source
software has extended into Drug Discovery and how Open Source Drug
Discovery (OSDD), a research consortium, is spearheading this
development philosophy for providing affordable health care.

He spoke about how Big Data Analysis and its usage in development of
drug discovery has brought down the cost of drug discovery by reducing
the need for drug trials. He further expanded on how crowd sourcing,
from students and teachers alike, has helped in research towards drug
discovery and genomics.

Free Software Foundation Tamil Nadu would like to thank Extra Mural
Lecture Team, IIT Madras for the opportunity to organise this lecture.

Regards,
Exectuive Committee
Free Software Foundation Tamil Nadu
