Where there is more market share for Windows (say pirated), there is
more market for Free software also (say GNU/Linux).

For them it's easy to make handsome bucks by providing pirated
solutions than giving customized solutions.

What you have tried to do for colleges/universities and what kind of
support you expect from them ?  How many engineering
colleges/univeriwsties you have visited so far ?

If there are hundreds of ways out there to make money from proprietary
software/solutions.  Then there are thousands of ways you will find
for making money from free software.

You have to be more specific about, how you have prepared yourself for
serving your customers.
