I second Spoonman's approach. I have used it.. apt-get'ing whatever and
whenever I needed something - helps keep you a lean system too :) and it works
like a charm.

umm.. I think if you install woody (with bf2.4 kernel) and then install "only"
what you need from testing then it's still possible over a 10KBps connection
with some patience.

Well, Sarge does have a small (~40MB) business card image with
the new debian-installer (built daily) but that may not be what you are
looking for. A possible approach coule be - do a base install with Woody using
bf24 kernel, add testing to sources.list, dist-upgrade and then onwards do a
need-based install.
