the problem is not with the player, afai can guess. the problem is either with a) sound not working as suggested by sandeep, or b) mp3-encoder. you need to read the documents that relate to mp3 encoders under linux carefully to check your installation is correct. i found the best documents on these, at links on mplayer, xmms, and of course, videolanclient. check 'em out.
