installing mpeg decoders and things is equally 'difficult' under
windoze, too. try installing multiple ones and tell me how you fare. the
reason is due to the complexity of having different codecs, the
low-level calls it could make to hardware, etc etc.

well, this question is loaded. when people run into the equivalent of
*.dll missing or file not found errors under windoze, their last resort
is usually just a fresh install of the whole os. try fixing a decayed
windoze os and you'll know what i mean.

under linux, if you want painless installations. use apt-get and for a
gui simple click operation, use synaptic on top.

i installed videolanclient after installing mplayer. but i agree
installations are a bit tough.

if you want real simplicity just install the whole PCQLinux2004 distro.
based on fedora core 1 with some updates, it features *all* that you
want, straight out-of-the-box.
