Hey! RPMs are a really fast and (most of the time), efficient way of installing apps on Linux. However, if you really want to be totally absolved of all such problems (like dependencies et all - which you seem to be facing with Xine), try source installs.
The install size is a wee bit bigger (since its the source itself), but once you master the concept of such procedures, its definitely going to make life much easier. Every source file has a README and INSTALL file which is a big help. It has step by step instructions - so no more relying on the *dumber instructions in mags! And, as for installing stuff for now, try getting the mplayer rpm from http://www.freshrpms.net. Its about 4MB in size, and plays every concievable format of media. You can even make it look like Windows Media Player!! And even if you have the slowest possible connection (like I do - a dialup :), you can finish it within 40 minutes (Maximum..).
