Hey!

RPMs are a really fast and (most of the time),
efficient way of installing apps on Linux. However, if
you really want to be totally absolved of all such
problems (like dependencies et all - which you seem to
be facing with Xine), try source installs.

The install size is a wee bit bigger (since its the
source itself), but once you master the concept of
such procedures, its definitely going to make life
much easier. Every source file has a README and
INSTALL file which is a big help. It has step by step
instructions - so no more relying on the *dumber
instructions in mags!

And, as for installing stuff for now, try getting the
mplayer rpm from http://www.freshrpms.net. Its about
4MB in size, and plays every concievable format of
media. You can even make it look like Windows Media
Player!!

And even if you have the slowest possible connection
(like I do - a dialup :), you can finish it within 40
minutes (Maximum..).

HTH
