We already have Linux-India-Programmers, which is pretty focused and
not high-volume. Why not stick to that? Or do you really feel a need
for a local programming list?

Reason I'm saying this is, ILUGD definitely has a Delhi focus.
Question is, do enough people feel that a Delhi-focused programming
list would be useful?

Ok. The reason is that there is already quite a few people (circa 10) who are actively discussing about programming in general (not Java specific) on the jug-delhi list. A number of us(and I am sure many on this list) are either involved with more than one programming language or want to talk about programming concepts in general(not language specific). We believe that it is best that we have a forum which is not language specific. That is the reason behind a separate mailing list.

Now, I am sure you all agree, discussing on the ilugd mailing list can never replace the installfests and other interactions and presentations that we have in our regular meets. Thus one of the focus of such a forum of ours will definitely involve meeting physically once in a while, where one can have presentations, debates, etc just like any regular ilugd meet. Our idea is that this will be just a different SIG(special interest group) under ILUGD. It will be much smaller than ILUGD but the topics would be more focussed. That is the reason why a local forum is needed.

Now, we can have a mailing list anywhere else. But since most of us people are also a lot into Linux and FLOSS software, much of our discussions overlap (atleast in philosophy) with the philosophical aims of ILUGD. So I feel, having the mailing list in the ILUGD domain would give a good message to others regarding the ideological background of such a forum. That is the reason why I/we would prefer it here.

If the idea of a mailing list on ILUGD doesnt gell with people around here, we would try out this experiment elsewhere. But I really think this is worthwhile to try out here.

In fact, I wonder why cant we have other forums on this line too. I am sure that while LL has been giving general talks about typesetting and publishing on this list, he would be more elaborate if there was a forum dedicated to graphics design, typesetting and other publishing areas. I would be one of the first person to sign up for such a forum. ;)

The idea behind these forums is not to split up the discussions at ILUGD. The idea is to allow people to discuss in more depth about technologies between people to whom it is more relevant. I am sure LL would feel more free to talk about his pet topics when he is sure that *most* of the people he is writing to find it useful.

We all continue to have common meetings to which people from all thes forums can contribute, just as before.
