Bulls**t.
Nothing to do with DSL but it depends on the modem being given to you. 
As a general rule if the modem they offer supports ethernet then it will
work for USB only a few modems would work on DSL (look up
eciadsl.flashtux.org ) and you have to insist that they give you such a
modem only. Alternately you can buy a modem and not take from them.
I have touchtel connections with ethernet ADSL modem up and running
(this connection also) only problem was that the people at most of the
service providers have not heard of anything beyond M$, including the
engineers!! On the flip side I also have a USB modem that does not work
at one location.
