So I finally bit the bullet and bought the new Motorola A760 mobile
phone. In case you're wondering what this has to do with this list,
hold your horses -- the A760 is a combined GSM phone and PDA that runs
Linux!

My militant cousin was with me when I went shopping, and with a
combination of batting her eyelids and bullying the poor dealer
mercilessly she managed to get about Rs. 1000 off the list price; I
finally shelled up Rs. 18.5K for it (plus 2% since I paid by credit
card, but if you pay cash you should be OK).

Was up till late last night playing with the phone. Couldn't check
out many of the features since (a) GPRS wasn't enabled on my
connection and (b) I didn't have time to get the USB connection
working with my machine.

However, here are the pros and cons that I've seen so far (in reverse
order);

Cons
- ----
- - No shell. Damn, how do I do an ls? Oh, there's a graphical file
manager ;)

- - Limited to 8MB RAM, not expandable

- - Could be faster

Pros
- ----

- - Standard MIDI files as ringtones. Man, I have about 200 MIDI files
lying around, finally I can do something with them!

- - Plays MP3; can also use MP3s as ringtones.

- - Built-in features rock: Camera, USB, IR, Bluetooth, RS232, 64K
colours. Does video and audio recording.

- - Java2, so presumably I can download J2ME apps from the 'net and
install them. Ssh, here I come!

- - Handwriting recognition! It even recognises my absolutely rotten
handwriting (except for mixing up ``a'' and ``d'' occasionally), so
I'd definitely recommend that feature.

- - Voice recognition, which I haven't tested out yet.

- - Comes standard with data and handsfree cables.

- - Built-in Speaker phone.

- - Hey, it's Linux!

Off for a couple of days, so don't call me up and ask questions about
the phone unless you're willing to pay my roaming charges ;) More
when I get back Tuesday/Wednesday.

Regards,
