FYI - Oracle 8.1.x is supported on some of the RedHat 7.x distros as well.

Which version of Oracle are we talking about? Please, give detail answers or provide 
links/docs to prove your point.

AFAIK describes the state of your mind (dilemma).

What would RAID/other best practices do in case of other failures reported due to 
uncertified combo. I recall another email from Yashpal Nagar (the originator) of his 
successful story that he got Oracle 8i installed on RedHat 8.0. Geez god help him for 
things to come...
