debian unstable is a must. Unless you have a bandwidth problem.

LL> what about suse? are there any suse in the production pc users here?

never used SuSE myself, but have seen some very happy users.

    LL> any other recommendations?

if you have the time, give linuxfromscratch a try. the systems you end up
building are just too fast and really gives you a good feeling. Though
maintaining them is a bit difficult. nevertheless, a great learning
experience. you can pick the sources from me if you are interested.

LL> nope, don't wanna consider gentoo. so mary, relax and get some
 chocolate. :-)

why don't you wanna try gentoo? if you are worried about compiling stage 1
tarballs, you can use stage 3 gentoo binaries for athlon XP or P4 etc. gentoo
is very promising and i have myself been using it for a long time. it rarely
has dependency problems, is very up-to-date, and has a really good & active
community. the portage system based on BSD ports just rocks.
