Hmm. What if the lesser mortals (like me) use dial-up? Makes me wonder: is 
there any way to make packages from installed suff? The record in the 
database records even the files, so, shouldn't it be easy to take packages 
out of this? I agree that some programs modify the installed files after 
running, but it will modify it after running it anyways.

For breaking large files to small chunks, there is  already an
utility called "split". see man for usage. It  breaks  a large
file into smaller userdefined chunks with the names xaa,  xab,
xac ... To rejoin them, do: '$cat x* > filename'
