You can't migrate an existing filesystem to LVM after the fact -- it
has to be configured as an LV from the start.
I've had enough issues with not being able to determine partition
sizes at system install time, and when I bought this current desktop
computer last February I decided to LVM everything that could be
LVM'd. Now I have /, /home and /data (where I keep miscellaneous data
- -- huge amounts) as LVM. Have run out of space on /data twice, bought
a new disk in the process, and it has grown from 100 to 150 to now
250GB without having to do anything except add a new partition, tell
LVM about and dynamically extend the filesystem.
My suggestion to the OP would be to create an LVM on the new disk, add
one partition to it to begin with and copy the data to that. Once
that is done, s/he can add the original partition to the LVM and keep
growing the LV as and when required. Saves huge energy and symlinks
all over the place, specially if, like me, you don't reinstall your
systems all that often.
Please have a look at the LVM HOWTO at tldp.org for more information.
The recipes section is particularly useful for quick-and-dirty jobs.
