Yes I realised that a minute after posting this :)

I remember that I did try switching the phone from modem to USB and it
still did not work. I did not have time in the morning to play with
the phone much though. I'll try unplugging and plugging it back today
evening.

No I had put in the bundled 512 MB card before I tried connecting it
to my system.

I just tried connecting the phone to a windows PC at work and it
works. So maybe it will work after some fiddling with my system too.
Will post the results tomorrow :)
