dear all,

a few nights ago my home was filled with thick, burning smoke. an
online UPS caught fire at night, took almost an hour to battle the
flames. the dangerous aspect was the truck-sized batteries connected
to it for 8 to 12 hours of backup during power failures. took another
hour for exhaust fans to clear the air, and even now the place has
residue acrid smells of the smoke & fire.

never mind the details, don't wish to repeat them. nasty experience.

this UPS was used to power lights and fans, like an inverter.
the setup's been working fine since 1999 with the usual regular maintenance etc.

i've been installing and using UPSes for since 1989 and am familiar
with all aspects of it. must have installed several dozen at various
sites till date, never had any problems. this may have been a freak
accident.

need your immediate advise and suggestions please.
to power lights and fans for a rating of about 1KVA to 1.5KVA, should
i go in for an online UPS or the new crop of pure-sinewave inverters?

more importantly, which brand would you recommend, and/or know works
in a similar setup reliably?

any specific things to watch out for in the unit?

thanks for your advise.

:-)
niyam
