I'm wondering why do you need to recompile kernel to rebuild your initrd. And
if you're compiling your own kernel, why're you using a ramdisk in the first
place, unless you want a generic kernel with all drivers in your ramdisk,
loaded at bootup during time of device detection.

In my opinion reinstalling the 'kernel' package will rebuild the initrd.
