apparantly, this proprietary-ware does pivoting in software.

so, taking the vision and philosophy of foss forward:
"once it's done by proprietaryware,
it can easily be replicated in foss"

all this would need is a few lines of perl code,
some modifications to the xorg file,
and you're done.

here's wikipedia on portrait+landscape rotation.
points out an LCD would suffer from light-polarization problems
if rotated.
but then again, that can be fixed too.
all you need to do is rotate your eyeballs 90 degrees each time
you haul that monitor on its side.
