One should absolutely not be worried about asking so-called "noob" questions. At the same time, you could have got some pretty good answers from a Google search for "FOSS business models". People have addressed such issues much better than I could, but perhaps the best-established FOSS business model is making money from support. The software comes for free, but it makes eminent business sense for one's clients to hire one's services at a cost. There are many examples of companies doing exactly that, but to my mind one of the most successful ones in this area is Redhat.
