I've looked into a few of these apps now, so I thought I'd provide a status update for those who are interested.
One of my core requirements (which I foolishly neglected to mention earlier) was the ability to allow non-admin users to log in and change their passwords via the web interface.
From what I can tell, the only open source LDAP manager that allows this at the moment is gosa. LAM has a closed-source "pro" version that allows it, the free version doesn't.
gosa is coincidentally the most complex to setup, since it requires a lot of gosa-specific schemas to be added to the directory. With the sladp configuration system changing over from slapd.conf to cn=config, this is a little tricky since gosa doesn't appear to ship with ldif files, only schema files.
I'm not an expert in this domain so I might be going about it the wrong way, but this stuff really shouldn't be this fiddly. If I were feeling unkind, I would say that I am starting to understand why so many companies are keen on Active Directory.
