Fair enough. It's important to me to understand how all this works though, opportunity cost aside.
Based on your additional requirements and assuming you don't have the domain knowledge of rolling your own, your choices boil down to LAM-Pro and MSADS. In your place I would do the monetary+feature evaluation and go for the solution that gives me the greatest bang for the buck.
For the moment, I'm using LAM along with a custom web.py app to allow users to change their passwords.
I've also managed to configure gosa and may end up using that once I've understood it better.
