> 2. The idea was to make the students and teachers of the various
> subjects in these schools to collectively develop a website which
> provides text for the current CBSE syllabus.
*LL*: seems the course will be for all classes? we will finalize this in our
initial briefing with the school.
>
> 3. The process (the contest) will be initiative in the upcoming
> Modern VV computer festival (Modem) and will be passed on the other
> participating schools as and when their respective festivals come.
*LL*: the option of volunteers contributing and other schools jumping in, is
actively encouraged as well. thus, a peer community has to be created that
evaluates, sub-edits, and validates the stuff being uploaded. more details on
this aspect, please.
>
> 4. It was decided that a stylesheet will have to be created to be
> given to everyone.
*LL*: we'll ask the schools to create the stylesheet (book, chapter, verse,
illustration style, etc) we'll work out the technical aspects of it.
>
> 5. The server/technology still remains an issue with Savannah having
> the "database issue" with it. Finally the Savannah.gnu.org idea was
> dropped.
*LL*: *but* we have to give a working demo on how this works, asap. vipul's
url of MIT should give us some pointers, i hope. vipul, could u please
scratch the door and find out what/how/they do it, and more importantly, what
license did they use for the opencourseware project?
*LL*: all decided that the courseware will be published using the gnu gpl fdl
license. more details of this license on the gnu website.
*LL*: the server and hosting itself needs to be worked out immediately as
well.
> 6. - The text format would be rtf, to be converted to sgml later or
> probably directly sgml.
>
> - Image format: png, svg.
*LL*: suggestions for more data formats welcome, but must be based on totally
open, published, and free, standards. (JPG isn't free, duh!)
> 7. BENEFITS OF FREED:
> - Quality Courseware: hopefully
> - Availability to (Affordability for) people
> - Depoliticised
> - Decommercialisation of CourseCourse
*LL*: and the freedom for others to reprint in textbook format, as
hard-copies, if requred.
>
> 8. RESPONSIBILITES
> - Register the project on Savannah (if being used) - Raj
> [not on action list anymore]
> - Meeting to be arranged with the school - LL
*LL*: INITIAL short briefing *arranged*. subsequent meeting based on the
briefing. (six-cylinders roaring, baby!)
> - Research on software to convert rtf to sgml - Vipul
*LL*: agree with the response email, that suggests lets start with sgml.
which means the schools will be given tools to convert (or even create) in
sgml and upload.
> - Software for svg editing/formatting - Viksit
> - Research on Directory structure and database - Dhruv, Pankaj, Prateek
> - Evaluation of preexisting (similar) sites - Prateek
*LL*: somebody do a review of the MIT website, please.

> 10. LL is designing a freedom Diwali card that can be sent to

> requirements. The idea is to send the card to as many people as

*LL*: initial cost of printing 1,000 or 2,000 needs to be shared.
>
> 13. It was sort of decided that from now you'd have to pay some
> nominal amount if you want free software CD's copied. We will have
> 4-5 CD duplication centers, one each in N, S, E, W and Central Delhi
> from where anyone can get copies of whatever free software CD's are
> available. The cost per CD would be Rs 50 if you come and pick them
> up. If you want them couriered, it'd cost you Rs. 100 per CD.
*LL*: does that include the cost of the CD, with/without a jewel box, or is
the media extra? rs 100 per cd is a bit much. for instance, if someone orders
3 cds of debian, then the cost of couriering them in *one* packet should be
charged.
*LL*: perhaps, more than money, a better idea would be to give the cds free
to anybody who asks for them, but on condition they give atleast two cds
free in turn for each free cd they get, within a time-period of maximum one
month. this is a guideline, and not supposed to be a punishable, enforceable
law or edit. of course, everyone provides their own media. a small list of
who gave away how many cds could also be set up, to encourage the idea.
*LL*: please understand, the moment people start thinking of making small
money even in giving away cds, the idea of rapidly sharing it will take a
step back. imagine the implications of this in schools for instance, where we
want the students and teachers to give away cds to fellow students, teachers,
schools, neighbours, friends, and even parents and their colleagues.
*LL*: the buddhist idea of let a single lamp light hundreds of other lamps is
more powerful, than the idea of a service fee per-lamp.
*LL*: soon' u'll have someone haggling over a discount on quantities!!! and
then we'll have to form a union! and then after a threshold, we'll start
talking about tax deduction at source!
*LL*: ugh guyz, wake up!
*LL*: once the membership of ilug and its active people crosses a critical
mass, and we know we have demands in excess of 1,000 cds for say the knoppix
cd, we may find it beneficial to pool money in, and get cd-duplication done
from somewhere. i noticed in germany for instance, sun microsystems got
volunteers, dressed in staroffice tee-shirts and attire, literally giving
away *free* cds of staroffice to thousands of people every day for 5 days, as
the people stepped out of commuter trains, during a trade show. what an
incredible promotion!
*LL*: against this perspective, we could start small by encouraging people to
give away atleast two free cds for everyone one free cd they get.
