I have an i845 board, ALSA sound works just fine on that.

I presume you're using the VESA drivers. I managed 1024x768x16-bit
with that. Tinker around with your video RAM and monitor settings,
should help.

That's a problem with XFree/VESA. I hope the next bunch of XFree86
drivers handle that situation better.
