been researching to figure out why gimp does *not* support cmyk color modes
natively, even though they do have gimp-print that works exceedingly well
with bubblejet printers. [even better than windoze versions, according to
experts.]

looks like the real problem is with the code-base. gimp's developers are
talking about an overhaul of the codebase, such that gimp version 2.0 will
give full support for color modes including cmyk, which professional print
professionals need.

do note that even then, support for pantone and other commercial+proprietory
inks will not happen for obvious reasons. [www.gnu.org].

however, gimp is out at 1.4, which means gimp2.0 will be ramping up real
fast, 'tis a matter of months.

incidentally, the desktop publishing software, scribus, has just come out
with a major features enhancement, including support for gradients, better
pdf integration, and other stuff. this is maturing rather rapidly.

looks like 2003 is gonna be the year of *serious* and *professional* graphic
arts and design on the gnuLinux platform.

the stage is being set:
scribus+gimp+gimp-print+gimp-film+littlecms+unicode&opentype fonts+gui-based
TeX layout software such as Kyle.
