It may not be the case with everybody, but since pre-ALSA days configuring sound had always been a pain for me. since you used 'play' instead of 'sox'... did you try 'sox' also? If it is the same error again... try changing the permissions to 0666 and try the command. Try it on /dev/audio first since alsa uses this by default. You said that it is running on one box and is not running on the other... Care to mention the distro and config? > > fuser (1) has what you need.
