Hi all,

The internal 56K in my imac 266 has been unable to connect at over 26400 bps
for the last few days. I'm wondering whether this is a problem with my
modem, the telephone infrastructure, or my ISP. I have swapped the "imac
internal 56K" modem script out for a new, identical one and this did not
help. It actually connects somewhat faster using the v.34 script than it
does with the "regular" internal 56K script.

I have not had this problem in the past with my current ISP. About a year
ago, I made the mistake of updating the modem firmware, which caused a
problem with my previous ISP (which had the advantage of being free through
my employer). Changing ISPs solved that one (now I have to pay).

Since I have done nothing to cause the current problem I am at a loss as to
what I can do to improve the connection speed. Does anyone know if
defaulting to a slower speed is symptomatic of a dying modem or do they
generally work fine until they stop working altogether ? The fact that the
v.34 script was faster than the "regular" script is what originally led me
to suspect problems with the modem script...

I don't want to buy a new modem unless I'm sure that I need one. Anybody
know an effective way to troubleshoot this problem ? Thanks in advance for
any advice.

MJF
