Wally, Have you partitioned your drive? If not, I'd strongly
recommend backing up your hard drive and then partitioning it. That
way you can specify that you want your downloaded files to go to a
specific partition where you can have a virus program scan each and
every download. You can still have File Sharing on, but just don't
share that partition unless you have a specific need to do so.
Without File Sharing on, that partition won't be locked and you'll be
able to unstuff your files. You also won't have fragmentation as
severely on your entire hard drive, and can defrag just the partition
that gets a lot of traffic.
As far as I know, that Shared Files folder is sitting on the desktop,
and that could be why you can't make changes to the desktop.
If you don't want to partition, try creating a 'Downloads' folder on
the hard drive and then have an alias of that folder on the desktop.
You'll still be able to access the folder quickly, still be able to
set up your virus application to scan all incoming traffic, etc.
You won't know till you try ;-)
