Hi-
I am new to this list, but reading through the posts find people to be
extremely knowledgeable and helpful...so here goes.
I have had two problems I have been unable to solve going on for some time.
I hope someone has had experience with either or both:
Background (from Apple System Profiler)--
Computer: Grape iMac
System: OS 8.6 US
CPU: Power PC G3, 333 MHz
RAM: 160 MB, VM is off
HD: 6 GB (502.5 MB currently available)
Problem 1--
When I download files I like to download to my desktop first. If the files
are compressed (.zip files for sure and possibly others), when attempting to
unstuff them by double-clicking I get a message that "Your preferred
destination folder is currently write-protected Error-45". If file sharing
is off it seems to work without a problem, but I share a great many files
and it takes a long time to restart file sharing.
This information may also be helpful: The computer is on an all Mac Ethernet
network with file sharing always on but only the "shared Files" folder is
being shared, not the entire contents of the hard drive. Also the expanding
application being used is Aladdin's Stuffit Expander 5.5.
My question is:
1. Is there any way to allow expanding the files to the desktop
permanently, without shutting off file sharing every time?
Problem 2--
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5 for Mac, which came with the iMac, is
currently my preferred e-mail program (I am "test driving" OE 5.02, but for
other reasons am not prepared to make the switch yet). Anyway, recently OE
4.5 has stopped reading HTML mail properly (i.e. Apple's iMac News, OS X
News, Apple eNews, you get the idea). It offers up the plain text version
instead. While version 5.02 reads them just fine. I know there must have
been some preference setting I've screwed up or a file has become corrupted
(possibly even during the OE 5.02 installation process). I also have a great
deal of saved e-mail on several accounts so I would prefer a solution that
does not involve reinstalling the entire application, if possible. The
frustrating thing is it worked originally and now it doesn't so I know it
can be fixed :-)
My questions are:
1. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get OE 4.5 to read HTML mail
properly again?
2. If not haw do I reinstall WITHOUT losing all the saved mail and account
information?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Wally
