Hey Andr,

A few things are happening at this stage of the boot process; The
machine is checking the RAM (even if you have this disabled, the
system still has to determine how much is where), looking for hard
disks, and verifying which disks are bootable.

First off, if any of your 256MB RAM was added after you got your
iMac, try removing it and see if the symptoms change. You could have
a chip that seems to be functioning normally, but has some minor,
undetectable problem.

Second, boot to the System Software CD and, using the Drive Setup
program, use the "Update Driver" feature under the "Functions" menu
(you have to select the hard drive first). If the hard disk driver is
corrupted, the iMac may be having a hard time figuring out what kind
of hard drive, what size, etc, is installed, thus causing the problem
you're seeing. Updating the Driver fixes this.

Last, make sure the Start Up Disk has the hard drive selected as the
boot device, and that there are no other System Folders on the hard
drive. Even a 'Previous System Folder' from a clean install should be
deleted after you're sure you don't need anything else from it... if
there are several System Folders, the iMac could be having a hard
time figuring out which one to use.

HTH!
Jeremy
