Here's my 2 cents:
  I run 8.6 w/96 MB of RAM. I have VM on and my Iomega 650 is plugged into a
hub. I always burn at 4X and have used crappy media like K Hypermedia. I've
never had anyproblems with it. I have iTunes, but I'm using the patched
version. (Fear not Apple execs, the leap to X is coming this summer) Maybe
that's the issue, but I could not seem to duplicate your problem on my
machine.
