Like a star shining through the fog, Michael Mark came to me in an
electronic vision and proclaimed:

Try zapping the PRAM and trashing the System Prefs & the Mac OS Prefs.
Then rebuild the desktop. (And the FileSharing suggestion was a good one
too... check to make certain that it's off.)
Believe me... The sun always shines on TV.
