This is correct. Installing iMac Update 1.0 on any other OS besides 8.1 will cause that OS not to boot. I didn't know that the update is only for iMac Bondi Blue Rev.A, but ok if that's what apple says then well, they probably know their hardware better than anyone. Thanks for the tip. >Note: The >iMac Update 1.0 is no longer available from Apple Software Updates sites. " > Good luck Katie. That's correct. You have to get it privately off somebody's hardrive or their old collection of disks. Apparently it is available on older IomegaWare CD's that came with Iomega Zip Drives of that era. >Now I'm going to open a fresh can of worms: >It's worth noting that Apple says if installing update 1.1, O.K. Hold it right there. Do you mean iMac Update 1.1 or do you mean iMac Firmware update 1.1 ? I'll presume you mean iMac Update 1.1 (the software). In discussions like this it's probably best to talk like a lawyer. Everything expressly stated. >"The iMac Firmware Update must be installed." Which iMac Firmware Update ? 1.2 ? or 1.0 ? I will presume Apple means 1.0 since if they just say iMac Firmware Update without any number after it they usually mean 1.0. Doing a get info on that file shows it to be 1.04. >"If you haven't installed the >iMac Firmware Update, the iMac Update 1.1 will not install." This is correct. My understanding is that iMac Firmware Update is necessary on a Rev.A/OS 8.1 in order to upgrade the OS or to upgrade to a higher OS. So if say you had a Rev.A running OS8.1 you would need to have iMac Firmware Update in order to install OS 9. It could be though that the OS 9 installer would do that for you before installing itself. >The only firmware update provided there is 1.2, and the info on this says it >is for those using Netboot: Go to this website: <http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/En glish-North_American/Macintosh/iMac/> it has both iMac Firmware Upgrade (1.0) and iMac Firmware Upgrade 1.2 >" The iMac Firmware Update 1.2 should be installed on all iMac computers >used in NetBoot client environments. Features >delivered with this update include improved support of NetBooting and... >It also says it incorporates 1.1 So are you supposed to install this version >(1.2) even if not using Netboot (whatever that is) ? >I guess it wont hurt to have a feature you dont need. >A search of the Apple site turned up only the "about Firmware Update 1.1" >file, not the installer. I have installed iMac Firmware Update 1.2 on this Rev.A/OS 8.1. Palomar software which writes printer drivers for Hewlett Packard recommended it. So I did just that. It runs fine. See <http://www.palomar.com/go/macusb> and <http://www.palomar.com/Printing/USBVersions.html> The read me for iMac Firmware Upgrade 1.2 says that it resolves a rare issue where more than 2MB of SGRAM is installed. The Rev.A I believe shipped with 2MB of SGRAM but it can be upgraded to more. If you install more, then it looks like you need iMac Firmware Upgrade 1.2. A note of caution when Apple says "should be installed on all iMac computers". They mean all iMac computers at the time when this particular update was realeased. They definitely don't mean all future iMacs. For example the Read Me file accompanying iMac Update 1.0 says "should be installed on all iMac computers". Definitely not the case. Install this update on anything greater than a Rev.A/OS 8.1 and the machine will refuse to boot. But at the time the Read Me was written all iMacs were Rev.A's so the statement was true at the time. It's probably best to make a table of all of this. Trying to keep this all in one's head is like trying to do long division in your head. I know from trying to set IRQ's and DMA addresses on a PC that you have to use a chart to keep track of things or you go crazy. I can tell you what I've done with this Rev.A. Original setup: Rev.A/OS 8.1 No known updates of any kind. A raw Rev.A in other words. 1. Erased the Hard drive with Drive Setup. 2. Formatted the Hard drive in HFS+ (Mac OS Extended Format) 3. Installed a fresh OS 8.1 4. Zapped the PRAM with Techtool Lite 5: Installed iMac Firmware Upgrade 1.2 6: Installed iMac Update 1.0 Runs just fine. Very stable. Note: when I went to install the iMac Firmware Upgrade 1.2 it told me that it was already installed! Either Techtool Lite installed it or a previous owner. Hope this helps George Summers This question was a bit too much for Katie so she asked me to step in. I'm her uncle George. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
