He may not need to zap anything....just go to system preferences and 
click on sound to make sure the volume is not at zero or that the sound 
isn't on mute.

I am not sure why OS X seems to randomly change these types of  
settings ? I have had to go in and change my sound preferences more than 
a couple of times.
