Seems like you should just upgrade to OS 9. It uses more RAM than 8.6 and some of its "features" are dubious, but it should run fine with 160MB of Built-In RAM. I have a 333MHz iMac also and it's running 9.2.1 with Open Transport 2.7.7
Before upgrading, make a backup copy of your 8.6 System Folder, and make sure that all the applications you use frequently can be used in 9.0 (some may require a downloadable update). Upgrading probably won't solve your crashing and freezing, unless you do a clean install. Most likely, you have an extension conflict.
